Cardio/warm-up
- Unloaded stationary bicycle (minimum 20 minutes)
Hip Strength
- Side-line hip raises (abductors)
- Bridging (glutes, quads, hamstrings)
- Quad sets/leg lift
- Shuttle (quads)
Hip Flexibility
- Quad stretch
- Hamstring stretch (supine -- keep hip unloaded)
- Hip flexors
- Piriformis stretch
- External rotation
Other workouts
- Strenght & sculpt class (free weights, core stability), 50 minutes, 2x/week
- Aqua-fitness class, 50 minutes, 1-2x/week
- Unloaded stationery bike -- 30 minutes, when I can stand the boredom!
This is a great list for exercises before hip surgery. It also recommended for patients with a few extra pounds to loose weight before surgery. Less weight on the hip joint allows a faster recovery and a the implant will also last longer.
